James Yen: A Global Pioneer of Mass Education in the 20th Century



In 1943, during the 400th-anniversary remembrance of Copernicus’s death, a Chinese man was elected among ten of the greatest revolutionaries who contributed to the modern world, along with Albert Einstein and Henry Ford. Yan Yangchu (1890-1990), known to the world as James Yen, was a Chinese educator who promoted mass education and rural reconstruction in China and beyond during the 20th century.
